Holiday Tips to Keep your Pet Safe

-         Keep chocolate out of reach as it can be potentially poisonous

-         Have your pet stay on their normal diet to avoid stomach upset from different food

 -         Candies and gum can also be toxic to pets

 -         No holiday leftovers for your dog or cat – bones can choke, and greasy and/or spoiled foods can cause illness

 -         Ensure alcoholic drinks are well out of reach as animals can become very ill after ingestion

 -         Keep foil and wrap away from pets, as well as ribbons and tinsel to avoid stomach upset and blockage, a common problem with cats

-         Some flowering plants (e.g., lilies) can be toxic to pets

 -         Mistletoe and holly berries can also be toxic to pets

 -         Poinsettias can cause stomach upset after ingestion

 -         Keep pets away from Christmas tree water – fertilizer from the tree or bacteria in the water could cause illness

The holidays are a time of great enjoyment for the whole family – play it safe with your pet and they can enjoy the season along with you.

Just in case, be sure to have the phone number for your veterinarian handy, as well as contact information for a 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic in your area, should you need to reach someone quickly if your pet suddenly takes ill.
