Foster Homes Needed

The SPCA of Western Quebec is in need of foster homes for our  special needs animals.

Such animals are considered 'special needs' due to a variety of reasons.  It could be a case of an injury/illness, or a recovery period after surgery.

This time of year represents breeding season, especially with the cat population.  As a result, we are seeing a significant increase in the number of pregnant females, mothers with very young litters, and orphans entering the shelter.

Given their tender ages, the ideal environment for these tiny ones is in the home, where they have the best opportunity to grow healthy and strong.  It is important, as well, for the pregnant females, as they need a comfortable, safe place leading up to the time to give birth.

In these cases, we ask that a foster home be willing to commit to the care of the animals until the kittens are at least of vaccination age, which would be 7-8 weeks old.  At that time, the kittens can receive their initial vaccination, and preferably return to the foster home for a quarantine period, to ensure that there is no reaction to the vaccination.  They can then enter the SPCA's adoption program soon thereafter.

If you are interested in becoming a foster parent to a shelter animal, please contact the SPCA at (819) 770-7722, drop by the shelter at 659 Auguste-Mondoux in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) or e-mail us at ahspca@storm.ca.  We'll need your contact info - name, address, & phone - and some background on your experience with animals & your home environment (e.g., any animals you might currently have).  In addition, if you wish to volunteer for a specific foster situation, you can indicate your preference as well (e.g., would like a shorter or longer term commitment).

(A special note of thanks to our foster extraordinaire, who has provided the foster pictures you see on our site, and has helped the SPCA greatly, most particularly in fostering mothers and kittens.  Please visit www.tinypaws.ca to see more.)
